A healthy tan -
There's no such thing unless it has come from a bottle!

If you have just spent the majority of the summer holidays
sitting in the sun trying to achieve a bronzed body or you can never spare those extra few seconds
to slap on the sun block before you leave the house... read on.
There is no doubt that a tan will make you feel more confident. The skin looks great, those irritating
spots disappear, teeth appear whiter and even legs look leaner - but with so much information available about the dangers of the sun, isn't it
time we sat up, took notice, thought about our actions but more importantly changed our habits
to prevent our children from making the same mistakes?
When the skin is exposed to UVB rays, melanin is released at the base of the
skin's surface in order
to protect itself and this causes a darkening of the skin. Senior consultant Dr Tariq, from Dr Tariq's Medical
Centre, reveals: "When skin tans, it is in an attempt to protect itself from the sun, The minute you see colour on the skin, it is a sign that the skin is damaged."
The sun emits two main types of rays: UVA and UVB. Both are dangerous but have very different effects on the skin.
UVA radiation is responsible for the ageing of the skin and long-term damage to it. It penetrates
the outer layer and reaches the dermis, where it breaks down the collagen and elasticity, which leads
to fine lines, wrinkles, and permanent age spots.
UVB has more difficulty reaching the dermis but burns skin tissue on the surface, resulting in redness and blistering. The immune system is attacked and the DNA destroyed. The damage can lead
to cell mutation and skin cancer Fortunately all skin cancer is treatable if caught early enough.
Most sun damage doesn't even begin to show until the forties and one of the most common signs of sun-damaged skin is
tough, leathery skin. Dr Tariq explains that this is caused during sun exposure when the skin develops additional layers of cells in an attempt
to protect itself.
Protection
No sun block is 100 per cent
effective, but used properly it can provide good protection from UV rays. The SPF number refers
to the level of protection the product will provide relative to the length of the
time it takes for the skin to burn when unprotected.
For example, if your skin would potentially burn in 10 minutes, an SPF4 can only protect you for 40 minutes, and a SPF30 can, if frequently and generously applied, protect up
to 300 minutes. But it is important to remember if you are sunbathing that sun cream has
to be reapplied throughout the day to be effective.
Obviously wearing a sun block is better than not wearing one at all whether you intend to sunbathe or not. But it is important
to consider the alternatives.
Most people will agree that they feel better with a tan but ironically the feeling of wellness is a complete contradiction
to the health implications of sunbathing. The easiest and safest way to get an instant allover
tan is from a bottle.
Preparing the body
Gone are the days when slapping on fake
tan meant you had to stand naked for two hours only to look like a streaky
orange and smell terrible. New products are coming on to the market seasonally and they are
great. The first step to getting
that instant drop dead beach babe look is:-
|

Don't forger to wax!
Next, pile on loads of moisturizer and rub a little Vaseline
on knees and elbows.
It is advisable to apply the tan using disposable gloves available
at the pharmacy (otherwise wash your hands thoroughly afterwards).
Smooth the tan starting from your feet and work your way up.

If you colour your face it is always recommended to mix a little
moisturizer with it.
Apply to the face in circular motions.
Don't forget the ears, and use a cotton bud to help feather
the tanner into your hairline.
